Are cosmetics that claim to be silicon free really safe?
In recent years, various companies have put forward the concept of "silicon free" in personal care products, but this is just a gimmick made as a niche marketing tool, just to show that "silicon free" formula is safer, healthier or provides a better environment than other formula products. But in fact, this wrong idea is often spread from social networks or other channels with vested interests, rather than through the premise of strict scientific research results.
Can silicone suffocate the skin?
Most organosilicon cannot penetrate liquid water, but it can allow oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor to pass through. In other words, when silicon containing products are used on the skin, they can "breathe". Some organosilicon products are used to reduce skin transdermal water loss (TEWL), which is one of the main causes of skin dryness and dehydration. This is why organosilicon products are used in wound, scar regeneration and even burn cream. The purpose of organosilicon products is to form a protective barrier on the skin surface to prevent water loss through the epidermis. Retaining water in damaged skin further reduces the risk of infection and skin irritation. Organosilicon products can create ideal moisture and oxygen atmosphere to change the skin and promote the formation of collagen, as well as regenerate the whole epidermal cells. In addition, silicone can also reduce skin redness, itching or pain, soften scar tissue, smooth scar and prevent abnormal scar formation.
Can silicone clog pores and cause cracking?
Organosilicon has high antioxidant capacity, so it is non thermogenic. They don't stink, and, because they're not irritating, they're non painful. At the same time, it has good antibacterial effect. However, organosilicon products may increase the permeability of some ingredients, such as common irritants such as perfume or known fat rich vegetable oil blocking pores, which are responsible for acne and blackheads.
Can organosilicon cause irritation?
Silicone does not irritate the skin. They actually reduce or eliminate irritation because they enhance the diffusion and balance of ingredients in use. This shift prevents the percentage of cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients in potentially irritating forms, including alpha hydroxy acid (AHAs), salicylic acid, strong emulsifiers and other surfactants, benzoyl peroxide and organic sunscreen.
