Is organosilicon biodegradable?

Although organosilicon is traditionally non biodegradable, they do degrade in the environment, breaking down into water, silica and / or silicates and carbon dioxide. The degradation of low molecular weight organosilicon (including cyclopentasiloxane) is triggered by sunlight and oxygen. Although the organosilicon with higher molecular weight is not easy to be degraded by ultraviolet, oxygen or ozone, it is easy to adsorb on the solid and anhydrous surface, and it is easy to preferentially adsorb on the sludge formed by sewage treatment plant. In the water treatment industry, the sludge is eventually incinerated. When the mineral clay is deposited on the soil, it will catalyze the fracture of organosilicon polymer skeleton. If the soil is kept wet, the degradation may take weeks to months, but if the soil becomes dry, the degradation may only take days. It was found that the soil treated with high concentration of organosilicon had little effect on microbial activity and little harm to plant germination and growth. Due to the self-lubricating property of silica gel, plasticizers are generally not needed in the use process, which avoids the pollution of plasticizers to the ecosystem.

Is organosilicon bioaccumulative?

Organosilicon is not bioaccumulative because they are too large to pass through the cell membrane and therefore do not accumulate in the organism.

Is silicone safe?

In the past 30 years, the application of organosilicon has been widely studied all over the world. There are more than 1000 well-documented studies on the safety of organosilicon alone. Research shows that under normal use conditions, organosilicon is very safe for human health and environment. All countries in the world, including Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union, have evaluated the safety data of specific silicone materials and confirmed their safety. In addition, the American cosmetic ingredient review (CIR) released a report as early as 2001, confirming that the application of organosilicon in cosmetics is safe. Organosilicon will continue to be used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, personal lubricants, food and prostheses.

Organosilicon has been used as the ingredient source of cosmetics for a long time

Organosilicon is the most useful and widely used raw material in personal care industry. Since 1950s, this kind of additive has been widely used in personal care industry because of its good effect and high cost performance. It is estimated that more than 50% of all new cosmetics contain at least one organosilicon.
