In those years, organosilicon has been "misunderstood" by us (1)

Organosilicon compounds were known as early as 1860's, and they were not commercialized until Dr. Eugene ROCHOW innovated on these important compounds in 1940's. After the 1950s, Dow Corning company in the United States launched the first silicon containing products, and silicone began to occupy an important position in daily cosmetics. Nowadays, skin care, hair care, shampoo and cosmetics products containing organosiloxane have been recognized by people. At the same time, more and more silicone compounds have been widely used in the formula of personal care products.

Skin care and cosmetics products: volatile silicone oil (dc345), low viscosity silicone oil, special silicone oil (cosmetic grade silicone oil, high refractive index silicone oil, alcohol ether silicone oil, silicone acrylate, air soluble particles), silicone emulsifier, silicone silicone silicone oil mixture, silicone volatile silicone oil mixture, silicone dimethyl silicone oil mixture, alkyl modified silicone wax, silicone emulsion, with Silicone elastomer, silicone oil and vegetable oil mixture.

Hair cleaning products: high viscosity dimethylsilicone oil, amino silicone oil, amino silicone emulsion, dimethylsilicone oil emulsion, silicone elastomer emulsion, etc.

Hair care products and styling products: silicone oil, including volatile silicone oil, low viscosity silicone oil, high viscosity silicone oil mixture, amino silicone oil, special silicone oil, silicone volatile silicone oil mixture, silicone dimethylsilicone oil mixture, amino silicone emulsion, dimethylsilicone emulsion, silicone elastomer emulsion, etc.

In 2014, influenced by "silicon free shampoo", the consumption growth of silicone products in the daily chemical industry declined. But at present, most of the so-called "silicone free" shampoo uses oil substitutes and cellulose to replace silicone oil for conditioning effect. Its freshness, smoothness and moisture are far less than silicone oil, and some substitutes still have risks of allergy and strong irritation.

Now, there are still some misunderstandings about personal care silicone products.

Is organosilicon a petroleum derivative?

In many cases, formula engineers and consumers mistakenly believe that organosilicon is a petrochemical product extracted from petroleum. In fact, organosilicon comes from sand, also known as quartz, which is composed of two of the most abundant elements on earth: oxygen and silicon. Its main component is silicon dioxide. Organosilicon can not be considered as micro plastic, because micro plastic is a kind of micro plastic, which will eventually enter the ocean and cause potential damage to the environment.
