Silicone oil is so widely used! Let's take a look at its production technology.

Silicone oil is a kind of linear small molecule silicone polymer with Si-O-Si as main chain and organic groups in side chain. It is widely used in textile, daily chemical, mechanical processing, chemical industry, electronics, electrical, medical and health industries. Silicone oil usually remains liquid at room temperature. With the increase of molecular weight, the viscosity also increases, so the viscosity is an important physical property index of silicone oil.

Characteristics of Silicone Oil

Silicone oil is generally a colorless, tasteless, non-toxic, non-volatile liquid, with the following characteristics

1. Good heat resistance

The bond energy of Si-O-Si-is 108 kcal/mol and can be used for a long time at - 60-220 C. The resistance to low and high temperature is improved by introducing phenyl groups.

2. Good oxidation stability and weather resistance

Oxidation was initiated at 200 c, and the addition of antioxidants could significantly prolong the gelation time of silicone oil.

3. Good electrical insulation

It has good dielectric properties, and its electrical properties change little with the change of temperature and cycle wave number. For example, the dielectric constant is 2.76, and the volume resistivity decreases with the increase of temperature.

4. Good hydrophobicity

The main chain is composed of polar silicon-oxygen chains, and the side chains are non-polar alkyl groups arranged outward, effectively preventing water molecules from entering. The interfacial tension of silicone oil to water is about 42 dynes/cm.

5. Low Viscosity-Temperature Coefficient

It is the material with the best viscous-temperature characteristic among all kinds of liquid lubricants.

6. High compression resistance

Viscosity varies greatly with increasing pressure, but is lower than that of ordinary mineral oils. For example, at 2000 atmospheric pressure, the viscosity of oil increases 50-5000 times, while that of silicone oil increases only 10 times.

7. Low surface tension

Surface tension is generally 20.8-21.1 dyne/cm; water is 72 dyne/cm; ethanol is 22.3 dyne/cm; mineral oil is 30-35 dyne/cm. It has good defoaming property, isolation performance and lubrication performance with other materials.

8. Non-toxic, tasteless and physiological inertia

It is one of the most inactive compounds known and has no rejection reaction with animals.

9. Good Lubrication

It has no adverse reactions to rubber, plastics, coatings, etc. It is Newtonian fluid with little change in viscosity under high shear. The lubrication performance can be improved by introducing chlorophenyl or substituting trifluoropropyl for methyl.

10. Chemical Properties

Silicon-oxygen bonds are not resistant to strong acids and alkalis; insoluble in water or aqueous solvents; aromatic, aliphatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons are the best solvents; also soluble in ethers, esters, higher alcohols and ketones.
