What is carbon black?

Hits: 294 img

Carbon black (also known as carbon black) is a colloidal particle similar to a sphere formed by the incomplete combustion or thermal cracking of a hydrocarbon compound (liquid or gaseous). It exists in the form of an aggregate and has a pure black powder or granular appearance. The particle size, structure and surface activity of the products vary greatly depending on the raw materials, manufacturing methods and production processes. The main component of carbon black is carbon, which also contains traces of hydrogen, oxygen, ash, and water.

In order to accurately grasp this concept, please refer to the following figure:

Carbon element-→ quasi-graphite structure-→ aggregates-→ agglomerates-→ granular carbon black
                     (Raw powder) raw
                 (Primary structure) (secondary structure)
                   ← (nm nm) ∣ (micron μm) →

Depending on van der Waals forces (intermolecular forces), carbon black aggregates of primary structure will agglomerate into agglomerates (also known as secondary structures). In coatings, inks or plastics, under the action of external forces, the secondary structure of carbon black becomes a primary structure and is distributed in the system. Granular carbon black is to meet the needs of storage, transportation, and pollution prevention. Wet or dry granulation results in larger carbon black particles.
