In the previous few days, more than 30 nurses were assessed in the skill assessment of urine catheterization operation. When asked about the choice of lubricants, they all replied to use paraffin oil for lubrication.


Indeed, in our daily work, paraffin oil is a commonly used lubricant, especially in the current catheterization operation, most of them use the one-time catheterization bag with their own lubricant, and the lubricant in the catheterization bag does not indicate what composition, but generally marks the lubricant, leading the nursing staff to mistakenly think that the lubricant is paraffin oil.


In addition, the disposable silicone catheter of the author's unit is only a single package catheter, which is not equipped with gloves, lubricants and other operating accessories. In the selection of lubricants, the clinical nurses unanimously chose paraffin oil.


When asked about the basis of selection, the urology nurses gave three answers:


First: I think paraffin oil can be used to lubricate no matter what material the catheter is made of, because paraffin oil has been used since I went to work. No abnormality has been found and no objection has been raised.


Second, I heard about the rupture of the air bag caused by using paraffin oil to moisten and smooth the catheter when I was studying. It seems that paraffin oil is only used for latex catheter, but not for silicone catheter.


Third: I think paraffin oil is "universal oil", and there is no sign in basic nursing that paraffin oil is forbidden to be used for lubrication, so it is no problem to use paraffin oil.


Through the above answers, it is enough to prove that nurses have a high degree of trust in traditional practices and basic nursing textbooks, but they do not pay enough attention to the instruction manual.
