Application Value of Acrylic Silicone Oil in UV Systems

Hits: 323 img

Acrylic silicone oil is a polydimethylsiloxane compound with acrylic functional groups as its terminal moieties. This unique molecular structure underpins its significant value in the field of photocuring. As a high-performance modifying additive, its terminal acrylic groups participate in cross-linking reactions within the UV resin system, thereby permanently incorporating the silicone component into the cured network via chemical bonding. This characteristic overcomes the issue of migration and leaching common with traditional additives, demonstrating remarkable effectiveness, particularly in optimizing the surface properties of materials.

The core mechanism of acrylic silicone oil in UV-curable systems stems from its amphiphilic nature. Its molecular backbone consists of flexible polydimethylsiloxane, granting it very low surface energy, excellent flexibility, and hydrophobicity. The terminal acrylate functional groups enable it to participate in the free radical polymerization reaction alongside other acrylate resins and monomers upon UV irradiation. This reaction integrates it not as a mere physical blend additive, but as a constitutive part of the cross-linked network. Due to the low surface energy of the silicone segments, they spontaneously migrate towards the air interface during the UV curing process, forming a dense, silicone-rich molecular layer on the film surface. This process, known as the "surface enrichment effect," is key to enhancing the coating's surface properties.

Based on this mechanism, acrylic silicone oil imparts a range of significant performance enhancements to UV-cured films. Firstly, it substantially improves the weatherability of the coating. The silicone segments possess outstanding resistance to UV light and oxidation, effectively delaying aging, yellowing, and chalking caused by prolonged exposure to light and heat/humidity, thereby extending the product's service life. Secondly, it provides a durable and superior feel to the film. It creates a silky, smooth touch on the surface, and because it is chemically bonded, this pleasant feel does not wear off easily due to friction, wiping, or long-term use, unlike physically added slip agents. Thirdly, it significantly enhances the stain resistance of the coating. The low-surface-energy silicone surface makes common stains (such as ink, fingerprints, oils) difficult to adhere, and easy to clean if they do. Furthermore, it can improve the low-temperature resistance and flexibility of the film, making it less prone to brittleness in cold environments and more suitable for application on plastic substrates requiring bending (such as PVC, TPU).

In practical applications, acrylic silicone oil is primarily used as a highly efficient surface modifier in various UV-curable formulations. It finds widespread use in UV coatings, UV inks, and UV adhesives. For instance, in UV clear topcoats for plastic housings of electronics like mobile phones and laptops, it is responsible for providing anti-fingerprint properties, a pleasant feel, and abrasion resistance. In UV coatings for substrates like metal and wood, it focuses more on improving leveling, slip, and scratch resistance. It is important to note that its addition level is typically low, usually between 0.1% to 2% of the total formulation weight, to be effective. Excessive addition may potentially affect intercoat adhesion, so the optimal dosage should be determined experimentally.

In summary, acrylic silicone oil successfully combines the enduring benefits of silicones—such as persistent smoothness, weather resistance, and anti-fouling—with the efficiency and durability of UV curing technology, thanks to its unique chemical structure. It solves the persistence problem that traditional physical blending additives cannot overcome, providing a key and reliable solution for enhancing the appearance, feel, and durability of high-end UV-cured products. It holds an indispensable value in the increasingly quality- and functionality-driven market for coatings and inks.
