Recently, Professor Zhao Wei's team from the school of food science, Jiangnan University has analyzed the issue of bioavailability from a new perspective of the relationship between functional factors such as prebiotics and intestinal bioavailability, redefining or enriching the theory of bioavailability. The research result "bioavailability based on the gut microbiology: a new perspective" was published online on April 29, 2020 in the high-level Journal Microbiology and molecular biology reviews, 84 (2), DOI: 10.1128/mmbr.00072-19, https://mmbr.asm.org/content/84/2/e00072-19.
In the process of using powerful food functional factors and different drugs, including traditional Chinese medicine, there are often low efficiency problems. This puzzle for many years is mainly due to the low bioavailability. Enzymes and bacteria in the gut are effective bioreactors in human body, which play an important role in the processing of food functional factors and drugs. It is this processing effect that makes some food functional factors and drug efficacy increase, decrease or lose, which is the phenomenon of high and low bioavailability. This report redefines and enriches food function factors and drug bioavailability based on the relationship between prebiotics gut bioavailability. At the same time, four ways of enzyme and bacteria affecting bioavailability in intestinal tract were described in detail. According to these four ways, the strategies of effectively improving food function factors and drug bioavailability and reducing side effects were given. This strategy provides new ideas for the development and utilization of new food functional factors and drugs. The concept and theory of food bioavailability may be redefined and enriched.
The above research reports were obtained from the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars (31522044), National Natural Science Fund (3152204316719093177203481870544), national key research and development plan (2017yfc1601704), Jiangsu Natural Science Fund (bk20181132), Jiangsu advanced food equipment manufacturing key laboratory project (fmz201904), national food science and engineering I Supported by the flow discipline construction project (jufstr20180205).
Microbiology and molecular biology reviews is the top journal of Microbiology and biology. The journal publishes only about 20 important reviews every year, mainly the latest and most important research results in microbiology, molecular biology and immunology.
