[Abstract] in 2015, the reporter and Professor Mike Wallace of the University of Washington cooperated to use SOM cluster analysis method to reveal a New Winter Atmospheric Low-Frequency flow pattern in the northern hemisphere (2015jas). Later, the reporter and graduate student Tan Xin and others jointly named this atmospheric flow pattern as the Western Hemisphere Circulation Pattern, revealing the wave mechanism of the formation and maintenance of the Western Hemisphere Circulation Pattern (WH pattern), especially the downstream effect of the weather transient wave caused by the upper low-frequency circulation anomaly plays an important role in the formation and maintenance of the wh pattern (2017jc). The above research content was introduced in the academic reports of the college in 2015 and 2017. This report will introduce our latest progress in revealing the energy mechanism of the formation and maintenance of the circulation pattern in the Western Hemisphere from the perspective of the atmospheric energy cycle (2019jc). The baroclinic energy conversion provided by the background field of latitudinal temperature gradient between the east of cold North America and the warm West Atlantic Ocean is the most effective way to convert the mean effective potential energy to the disturbance effective potential energy. The energy study shows that the WH type is a low-frequency mode formed and maintained through the internal process of the atmosphere, which is similar to the formation and maintenance mechanism of the Western Pacific teleconnection type.
